5th Month Mark

Yesterday marked Hynlee's 5th month anniversary of her diagnosis. The diagnosis isn't something you want to celebrate, but looking how far we come is. Thinking back to that night....those first few weeks...the fear...the unknown. Everything was so overwhelming.  But now looking back, the only way I know to describe that time is the Footprints poem. The one where you aren't strong enough to walk on your own so the Lord carries you. I thought then there is no way I can handle this. This is too much. But By His Grace we have made it.

I had my moments when I hated the disease. Being totally honest, its something very easy to hate. But it took me realizing this isn't going away.  Everyday from now on we are going to face this battle. I could either accept it and deal with it the best I could, or spend the rest of my life with this overwhelming feeling of defeat. That was a turning point on this journey for me. It seemed like it got a little easier from then on. That I was no longer battling not only her blood sugar daily, but a war against something I couldn't change.

But as we sat in the restaurant with our little family the other day, those dark thoughts tried their best to return. Like always, I was checking her levels before eating and we were getting looks from some other people. Most adults give you looks of sympathy, kids faces are mostly filled with either fear or questions. But today I sat looking around at the other children in the restaurant. They were all busy being just kids. Crawling under tables, coloring pictures, or arguing what they wanted to eat. None of them were being poked, yet again. Before I thought about the words, I asked Derick does he ever just get mad at our situation. Of course, he said No. There is a reason for it. I believe that too. I wasn't meaning I wished another child had it instead. I would never wish this on anyone, yet alone another child. But there are days when I sit back and look at her, thinking of the obstacles that could stand in her way. The risks, and dangers that could easily harm my baby.

I hate that I let those thoughts come rushing back. But it's at those times that I am reminded how far the Lord has brought us. He knows exactly what he's doing and I'm just going to have to trust him more. It's like when I found out I was expecting again. Terrified isn't the word. All I kept saying was I can't do this. How can I handle another baby on top of everything else we are going through. I was doubting what HE had instore for us. But now we are being told of a treatment being used to treat, possibly cure T1D using cord blood. And a siblings cord blood has an excellent chance of being a perfect match. We are still looking into the pros and cons. But here I was thinking I can't, and maybe just maybe this miracle baby is going to help me more than I ever thought possible.

9 Wonderful Years

Family pictures 2009

This past weekend, Derick and I celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary. I can't believe it's been nine years already. I guess, time flies when your having fun! It seems like only yesterday we were teenagers in love.I know every couple thinks of their love story as the most romantic, sweetest thing ever, and ours was nothing short of amazing. At the time, no one wanted us together. And the more they tried to pull us apart, the stronger we grew together. I can't put into words what he means to me. He is my everything. My love. My rock. My best friend. My biggest supporter. My happy place.

In 2009, we took the girls to our old getaway, Stone Mountain.

In honor of our 9 wonderful years together, here is a list of my most favorite memories with Derick

1. By far, June 14, 2002! It was that day that forever changed the rest of my life!

2. Feb. 28, 2003. The day I knew we would be together forever. Nothing else in life mattered, if I couldn't have this man by my side forever.

3. Dec. 1, 2003; April 22, 2005; and Feb. 4, 2009. Watching him tear up at the birth of his new baby daughters. The joy in his eyes as he cut the cord, and was handed his precious baby girl for the first time.

4. The Sundial. When asked me to be his wife

5. The Georgian Terrance. Yes, he spoiled me good before we had kids!

6. Our car trips. We use to get in the car and end of miles from here. Never knowing exactly where we were headed. It didn't matter as long as we were together!

7. The Orange Groves in Florida. It may not seem like much to most. But it's the little things that matter the most. It's something that we enjoy.

8. He's my accomplice. When I worked, he would sneak and call in for me or just get me out of work early. We would sneak off to Stone Mtn. for the day just to get away from the drama!

9. And every night when I go to sleep in his arms. No matter how stressed I am from the day I forget it all when I lay my head on his chest.

I love you Dernack, always and forever!!

Christmas came a little early

Last week on 12-21-2012....the supposed end of the world, I got some unexpected news. MOMENTS after finishing up the last post(Strong Enough) I found out that I would be a new Mommy again. Yep, you read it correct. 4 KIDS!

I had always said I either wanted 2 or 4, never a middle child. I was the middle and trust me it's NO fun!! But after Hynlee, I felt as if our family was complete. I was done. Of course, Derick would make the occasional comment about another, but we were done. Or so we thought. With the others, I was beyond thrilled. Yes, they were all surprises. We have yet to plan a pregnancy:) But, this one was different. My first thought was there is no way I can handle another, not with Hynlee's care. It takes every bit of my energy to stay on top of her care, her injections, the girls schooling, the house, and still try to be a sane mother and wife. How could I ever stretch myself further. I couldn't give this child the attention it needs and deserves. It was most defiantly a different feeling. But with the help of a good friend and my sister, I was able to pull myself together and get ready to tell Derick.

I love being creative. It's just who I am. But being in shock still and with the 4th you kind of run out of ideas. LOL. All I knew to do was wrap it up as an early Christmas gift and surprise him. Well, it wasn't much of a surprise. He said he could read it all over my face. The plan was to wait until the right moment. Well the very second I saw him, I couldn't wait. He took the news a lot better than I did. He said something that will forever stick with me. He couldn't stand the thought of 20 years from now looking at our child, and remembering me....the mother not being happy. That hit me hard. And I needed to hear it. It's not that I wasn't happy....if you know me I would adopt every child who doesn't have a home. I was just overwhelmed at the moment.

After reality set in and all was real, we decided to wait until Christmas to tell everyone. The night before Christmas we told the girls. They were allowed to open one early gift. The reaction was priceless. It took a second for it to register but when it did they were thrilled!

Next was the grandparents. I think we took them all by surprise. Some almost went into shock! But it was right after we told them I felt something wasn't right. We were on the way to Derick's family dinner when I got the worst set of stomach cramps EVER! I'm still not sure how I made it through the lunch without leaving early.

The next morning was my first ob appointment. And that gut feeling that something just wasn't right was correct. First problem, the gestational sac was in the wrong location. Next, I have a LARGE hemotma in my uterus. My OB said we would start with labs, check my HCG levels and come back in two days to recheck again. If my levels didn't improve I had two options, 1st...continue to try and carry the baby with the risk of me hemorrhaging. 2nd... taking medicine to finish the miscarriage that at the time looked inevitable. In my mind there was no choice. I would never end my child's life, ever! If it was the Lords will for me to not carry this baby, he would take it. I couldn't. I totally get it, I have other babies that I have to be here for, and Lord willing I will. But as a Mommy you put your babies before you always no matter the circumstance!

I didn't make it to the lab before I lost it. How could this be happening? Was it my fault? Was this because I was doubting being able to care for another. At that very moment, all those doubts and fears left. Yes, it would be trying, a struggle at times. But the Lord had already given me this baby, and I wanted nothing more than the chance to be it's mommy too.

I have always believed in angels on Earth, but honestly believe up until Hynlee's diagnosis I was too busy to notice them. Hynlee has had many in her journey. But in the lab that day, I met mine. I still get cold chills every time I think about it. At that moment, I felt completely alone but looking back the Lord was right there with me. He knew exactly what he was doing and which technician I needed to be scheduled with. She took one look at me and knew something wasn't right. She reached out her arms, and in them I fell. As I told her everything from my fears of caring for Hynlee and the baby, to now the unknown, she sat there and listened to every word. At some point I shared that this was Hynlee's Christmas wish, to have another baby. She simply said, "Maybe this is what the Lord wants. Maybe he knows you can't handle another one, but wanted her to have an angel watching her through her struggle." No words. Just tears. I don't know how long I was there, but she stayed right beside me, comforting me. I know she knew she was right where the Lord wanted her. She later told me she is almost completed her christian counseling degree. She will be amazing!

It was a miracle I made it home that day. I couldn't see the road for the tears. The next few days were nothing but a blur. I didn't get out of bed. My kids basically took care of themselves.

I still can't eat. Every time I do I cramp so bad I could cry. I'm terrified of going to the bathroom, scared of what I might find.

It's been a week since my first sonogram. Derick went with me for my recheck. We were both so nervous we didn't say a word the whole way there. As I laid back on the exam table, I couldn't decide if I wanted to look at the screen, or just get up and run. I didn't want to hear any more bad news. The gestational sack has moved. It's where it needs to be. Thank you Lord! And it had changed, bigger, more developed. Still no baby visible, but we are headed in the right direction. Thank you again Lord! But the hematoma is still there. Some angles it looked bigger, some smaller. So we aren't sure if it's still bleeding. It's still very large. My doctor's words, "You aren't out of the woods yet. But we are seeing improvement." She told me she was sure I would miscarry the weekend before. That's my God! I still have to take it easy, no overdoing it. And pray every day that this will go away. Our greatest desire is for it to dissolve.

I got my lab results today. My HCG has more than doubled since Friday. So blessed!!

Strong Enough

There are times when I feel as if diabetes is consuming me. Like it's sucking the very breath out of me. I feel as if no one really gets it. It's like waking up every single day to fight the same battle that you battled all day. Some days we win, some days we don't. We don't get off days, or sick days. No vacation or holiday stands in it's way.

At first, I had my fair share of days where I HATED diabetes. It so easy to feel that way, to let it get the best of you. But on one of those days, as I sat there thinking those dark thoughts it hit me. If I hate diabetes, then in some twisted way, I hate a part of Hynlee. That was all it took for me to change my way of thinking. NO, I don't like it. And yes, I wish with every being in my body there was a cure. But, I can't hate it. If I let hate into my heart, it can only go down from here. Diabetes doesn't have Hynlee, Hynlee has diabetes. And I repeat the verse, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. OVER AND OVER.

There are NO words to describe Hynlee's courage, her strength. She amazes me everyday. I made the comment to Derick a few weeks ago, I'm only as strong as she is. If she breaks down, so do I. But that's not true. She is far stronger than me. Maybe I'm carrying the burden for the both of us. And if that's the case, it's a burden I will gladly carry for her.

The prayers are what have carried us this far. Trust me, there are moments when all I can do is cry happy, blessed tears. Moments when I can feel those prayers said for my baby girl.

I'm leaving you with my new theme song. I promise you I play this 987,563,789 times a day...at least!!

Strong Enough
Matthew West
You must
You must think I'm strong
To give me what I'm going through
Well, forgive me
Forgive me if I'm wrong
But this looks like more than I can do
On my own

I know I'm not strong enough to be
everything that I'm supposed to be
I give up
I'm not stong enough
Hands of mercy won't you cover me
Lord right now I'm asking you to be
Strong enough
Strong enough
For the both of us

Well, maybe
Maybe that's the point
To reach the point of giving up
Cause when I'm finally
Finally at rock bottom
Well, that's when I start looking up
And reaching out

I know I'm not strong enough to be
Everything that I'm supposed to be
I give up
I'm not stong enough
Hands of mercy won't you cover me
Lord right now I'm asking you to be
Strong enough
Strong enough

Cause I'm broken
Down to nothing
But I'm still holding on to the one thing
You are God
and you are strong
When I am weak

I can do all things
Through Christ who gives me strength

And I don't have to be
Strong enough
Strong enough
I can do all things
Through Christ who gives me strength

And I don't have to be
Strong enough
Strong enough

Oh, yeah
I know I'm not strong enough to be
Everything that I'm supposed to be

I give up
I'm not stong enough
Hands of mercy won't you cover me

Lord right now I'm asking you to be
Strong enough
Strong enough
Strong enough

As I checked on Hynlee just now, and heard her stir as I got her meter ready, I realized yet again how blessed I am by this precious child. Losing sleep because I need to test her throughout the night is worth it to have the assurance that she is alive and well. Most parents don't give it a second thought when they tuck their children in each night; they rest peacefully, assuming they'll wake in ...
the morning to a healthy child. Type 1 diabetes isn't always so kind; it can steal my precious daughter away if I'm not alert and attentive. November is diabetes awareness month; learn the signs and symptoms of the onset of type 1 diabetes and if your life has been touched by someone living with this auto immune disease, take a moment to let them know you really do care about them.

Please take a minute and watch a video made for Hynlee. We are fundraising for her a Diabetic Alert Dog. This dog could very well save her life one day. She is currently on the waiting list. http://youtu.be/hdCjaEpHP5A

Diabetes Awareness Month

This morning before school the girls were watching Disney channel. I heard this song and thought of the daily struggle my Hynlee girl faces. Please continue to say a prayer for my baby. Today her endocrinologist called and had added a long acting insulin in the morning.

In honor of Diabetes Awareness month and T1D, this is for you my hero!

"You're Something Beautiful"
Tell me, who's your angel?
Who's your shoulder
to hold your boulders?

Tell me, when it's raining,
who will warm ya?
Who will hold ya?

You might be broken with
all these cracks in your skin.
You might be broken,
that's where the light gets in.

You're something
beautiful, beautiful,
beautiful

You're something
beautiful, beautiful,
beautiful

And I just want
you to know,
you to know, you to know
That you're not alone,
you're not alone. Oh, oh.
